For the first time, you can enter a casino

My first encounter with slot machine gaming was in 2003 at a small tribal Casino (Kewadin Casino Manistique in Michigan). After visiting relatives in the lower Peninsula, I was returning to Iowa to finish my graduate studies and had just found a hotel that would allow me to spend the night.

It was right across the street from this hotel that there was a casino. I was unaware that the casino existed until the hotel provided tokens worth $20 to allow me to play.

When I first went to a slot machine, it was a scary experience. You know, what would my non-gambler friends think? But I managed to find my strength and carried on.

I vividly remember quickly spending $20 worth of tokens at slots. A further $50 I could not afford to lose. I was a poor graduate students on a research grant and had a side job as an instructor of college Physics. I had just spent my food money for the return trip.

After spending $50, I was unable to afford to lose it so I left the casino. As I drove home, I began to consider gambling on slot machines. My mistake was in not being prepared for success. This has continued to plague my life, by the way. My simple rule failed to recognize the error. I won $500 at a 25 cent slot machine almost immediately after I entered this second casino.

I felt quite emotional while doing so, and decided to stick to the rule. This is what I did. I continued to win small, non-taxable Jackpots throughout the afternoon, evening, and early morning.

I ended up spending my $25 plus what I’d won. This was my second visit to a casino. I had been playing for just 10 minutes, but was now enjoying a 12-hour-long session.
